About BigCatWise

What we cover

We explain the biology, behavior, habitats and conservation of six species: the lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, cheetah and snow leopard. Our aim is clear, accurate, answer first pages that are useful to students, teachers, travellers and anyone curious about big cats.

How we write and source

All text and illustrations on this site are original. Facts and figures are drawn from reputable sources, principally the IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group and IUCN Red List, Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, WWF, Panthera, the Snow Leopard Trust and peer reviewed research. Each page lists its sources and shows when it was last updated. We do not claim field expertise we do not have, and we do not invent statistics.

Wild population estimates change as new surveys are published. If you spot something out of date or wrong, please tell us and we will check and correct it.
